My resume isnt what landed me my dream job Heres what I did

My resume isnt what landed me my dream job Heres what I didMy resume isnt what landed me my dream job Heres what I didI used to keep my career and personal life very separate. It was basically like the division of church and state. I remained professional at all times in the office and let few into my personal life beyond the basic music, movies and sports chitchat. I thought there was a right way to find career success - stay on the straight and narrow path so you can climb the ladder and never look back. But when I waslaid off from workin February 2017 and then again in November 2017, I decided to throw everything I knew out the window. I needed anotlageher job, and I needed a new strategy if I was going to land one that was going to stick.Spinning The Negative Into A PositiveIve always had a passion for career development. As a self-titled career enthusiast, my dream job has always been to write about networking, interviewing, job searching, negotiatingand more. So when I was la id off from work the second time in 2017, I wasnt sure how I could spin my experience and land a job as a career editor. All I could think was, Why would someone want to hire me as a career editor when Ive been laid off twice in one year? But I was missing something. Being laid off twice in one year made me an evenbettercandidate for a career editor role. It also helped me learn more about my personal finances since I needed to live on an even stricter budget than before.I could give real-life advice for how to budget your financeswhen youre laid off from work, or how to land a job when youve been unemployed for a few months. I was networking all the time and writing cover letters day in and day out. It also platzdeckchen me apart from the other candidates who may have only read about layoffs or were rusty with their networking, interviewing or negotiating skills. I was able to spin this negative into a positive and use it to my advantage when applying for jobs. My personal experienc ehelpedme land interviews and job offers.Letting People In And Landing A JobWhile all of this was happening, I was working on my personal finances. I had bought a house at just 25 years old with my boyfriend. We saved a lot during our first few years out of college and decided to make the investment rather than rent an apartment. Not many people in my professional life knew about this achievement at the time, nor did I think theyd necessarily care. People dont buy homes in their 20s like they used to, especially with the amount of student loan debt millennials are paying back. So I pretty much kept this accomplishment to myself and only shared it with friends and family members. However, this huge milestone became the jumpstart I needed to get really good with my money, which eventually led to job offers in financial media. I realized I was pretty good with my cash after being able to save up enoughmoney for a housein such a short amount of time. Plus, I had learned the value of inves ting fast, which I realized not many twenty-somethings can say, either. After buying a house, I startedinvesting moneyin other ways. I had an IRA in tandem with my 401(k) and a handful of stocks, plus I opened separateinvestment accounts with Ellevest. I createdmultiple budget spreadsheetsand financial plans, too. I wasowningmy finances. So when I interviewed for jobs in the real estate space, personal finance industry and financial content marketing, I was able to tell the story about how I bought my first home at 25 and took real control over my financial future. All of this personal experience with money helped me be a qualified candidate for each of these roles. I was offered a job at each of these companies. The Perfect MixWhen my dream job eventually came around, I knew I had to use my personal experience and my career experience as the perfect mix in order to show how qualified I really was for the role. I included each of these stories in my cover letter and further discussed e ach oneduring the interview.Between being laid off from work and managing my finances like a boss, plus my career experience in the media industry, I was able to land the role of senior career and finance editor at Swirled. Years ago, I wouldve never thought that my personal experience would help me land a job. I wouldve kept my personal finance accomplishments to myself, or downplayed my year of double layoffs. But instead, these two experiences made me a strong candidate, and for that, Im grateful.Dont be shy about what youve accomplished in your personal life. Your career experience can only get you so far. Aim to be your whole self at work and in interviews so you can land the job youve always wanted. And embrace the crazy path youre on because itll never be straight and narrow. Itll only continue twisting and turning, but if you learn how to navigate it, youll still find success in the end.Thispostwas originally published onSwirled.comin the Thrive section, which covers valuabl e career and personal finance content for Millennials.

Yes, you can actually learn in your sleep, study finds

Yes, you can actually learn in your sleep, study findsYes, you can actually learn in your sleep, study findsLearning is hard enough when were conscious. It would be nice if we could close our eyes and leave the heavy lifting to our sleeping brains. In the past, learning in your sleep might have been laughed off as a crazy fantasy sold by charlatans and science fiction films. In the 1920s, A. B. Saliger invented aPsycho-phone, an automatic suggestion machine that promised to give you health or inspiration if you played phonograph records at night, according to the Washington Post. Although thousands bought into the idea, Saligers business went under, perhaps because his Psych-phones werent delivering on its promise.A new study found that those Psycho-phones were onto something learning in your sleep is possible. We cant learn skills or facts from sleep alone, but we can learn new memories, researchers found. A team of neuroscientists published a study in Nature Communications that outli nes how they figured out how to teach participants acoustic lessons in their sleep. The neuroscientists recruited 20 participants with no history of sleep disorders to listen to random acoustic noises while they slept. When participants woke up, they were asked to recall the pattern in the split-second white-noise sounds in the recordings. Those who listened to the clips during their light sleep cycles were able to do this at a rate thats higher than random chance. Its a task that goes beyond passive learning, the scientists said. The noise samples are fully novel to listeners, ensuring the formation of new memories and not consolidation, the study states.Memories can be introduced and strengthened in our sleepMemories can be strengthened or worsened, depending on when you introduce new stimuli into your sleep cycle. Participants werent able to recall the patterns as well during thedeeper non-REM sleep sequences as they could during their lighter sleep stage.Noisepresented during non-R EM sleep led to worse performanceas if there were a negative form of learning, the study said. This study reinforces previous sleep studies that found we can alter our mind while we sleep through reconditioning. A 2015 study found that being exposed to foreign language words in your sleep helps you identify and translate them when you wake up.One studyeven got smokers to cut down on smoking through smell conditioning in their sleep. It turns out, if youre forced to smell unpleasant rotting foods after being exposed to cigarette smoke in your sleep, youll want to smoke less when youre awake. So you cant yet dream your way into learning a new language overnight. And if you put a book under your pillow, youre still not going to have the contents inside absorbed into your brain by morning. You can, however, teach yourself new memories and break old patterns by snoozing, according to sleep studies. Hey, its a start.

Compare yourself to who you were yesterday not who others are today

Compare yourself to who you were yesterday leid who others are todayCompare yourself to who you were yesterday not who others are todayJordan Peterson said that. Its rule number 4 of his best-selling book, 12 Rules For Life.No one else is really like you in any deep sense, Peterson said. The conditions of your life truly are unique. You have no idea how much time and effort someone else has put into achieving the results you envy.Channel your envy into purpose. The only person you should try to be better than is who you were yesterday. The pragmatic principle of this chapter is to consistently bargain with yourself to make small incremental positive changes in your life. The idea is not only measurable but also fulfilling to see the little gradual improvements in your own life.Anyone who isnt embarrassed of who they were last year probably isnt learning enough, says Alain de Botton.Peterson encourages us to avoid comparing our progression against others but instead against where we previo usly had been. Its a great way to make progress in life. The human brain has a natural tendency to make comparisons as a system of developing logic and reasoning. You cant stop comparing. Its inevitable. But you can channel your brain to make a better comparison in your long-term interest, growth, and happiness.Change the object of comparison to yourself. If the urge to compare is too strong to ignore, measure yourself against yourself.Once you truly understand how to let go of your comparison mindset, you will see the world from an entirely different perspective. The dangers of pinning our happiness/progress with on how we measure up to others are too great to ignore. The more you desperately want to be like someone else, the more unworthy you feel. The more you desperately want to be happier, the lonelier you become, despite the awesome people surrounding you. What do you know about yourself? You are here to live your own story.Dont focus on the actions of other people, but on your own.Aim ing at the wrong thing has serious adverse consequences. It causes us to miss other important things in life. There is an endless supply of people to whom you could compare yourself and your accomplishments, but, inevitably, youll always end up on the losing side of the comparison. Thats because there will always be someone who has done something that you wished you could also accomplish says Lisa Quest of Forbes.Living in constant envy of others is not wisdom.Wisdom is facing the world exactly as it is and opening our eyes to opportunities to improve ourselves, the world and those around us.In life we only see what we aim at.The rest of the world (and thats most of it) is hidden. If you consistently focus on everything you dont have, instead of who you were yesterday and how far youve come, you will build self-doubt overtime. When you abflug aiming at something different - something like I want to be better than I was yesterday - your minds will start presenting you with new inform ation, derived from your previously hidden self, to aid you in your new pursuit and quest to become a better version of yourself. The idea is to start using yourself yesterday as a baseline, so you can at least notice the direction and magnitude of the changes you can make today. With enough information about who were yesterday, you can use this knowledge to influence your future actions so that on average you are improving over time. The key to the good life you really need is giving a damn about whats important to your growth, career and total well being. To improve daily, put your gap time to good useAnywhere from 13 hours of your day is probably spent in gap time.Gap times are those between meaningful activities but arent normally long enough to get more done. Or the time you need to recover from deep work.Whether its 10 minutes or 1 hour a day, all of us can devote a small portion of our time to learning, and personal growth.Your life and career depends on it.Commuting to work, wai ting in line, small talks at the office, small breaks in your schedule, long breaks from work and everything you do when you are not actively working on your tasks for the day.You can listen to a podcast, learn a new skill, read a book, read the articles youve bookmarked, plan the rest of your day, or better totenstill take a productive pause to clear your mind. You can cut back on other low-value activities (responding to social media distractions) to make time for learning.I make time for personal growth by making time.Spend most of your free time learning.Make most of every little spare time to get better everyday. Its not the big things that add up in the end its the hundreds, thousands, or millions of little things that separate the ordinary from the extraordinary, says Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect.Extraordinary people dont manage time, they make time for whats important. Make time for yourself.Darren lays out a simple formula in the first chapter of his bookSmall, Smart Choices + Consistency + Time = RADICAL DIFFERENCEAccording to Darren, Small, seemingly insignificant steps completed consistently over time will create a radical difference in your life and put you on the road to the career success you want and deserve. You dont need a radical process to grow or become your best self. The small choices you make daily matters.Creating a career development plan with goals and objectives and then work toward accomplishing these at a comfortable pace, bearing in mind what you accomplished yesterday.Take charge of your life. If youre unsatisfied with the present, do something different that will improve your odds of success.Stop giving a f*ck about everything you are not and start livingYour life will significantly improve if you care less about what you are not, and care more about becoming the best version of yourself. Before you go If you enjoyed this post, you will love Postanly Weekly, my free weekly digest of the best posts about behavior chang e that affect health, wealth, and productivity. 4 ways to add more meaning to your day, life career

4 ways to add more meaning to yur day, life career4 ways to add more meaning to yur day, life careerThe everyday work grind can sometimes feel like, well, a bit of a grind. So, when your enthusiasm flags and every day feels as blah as the one that came before, how can you find ways to add meaning to your day, much less your life or career?Share spaced, shared valuesEven if your own zest for life seems to be lacking, sharing a work space with people who are on a similar mission might help buoy you up when youd otherwise be bummed. Working on something you believe in and surrounding yourself with people who share your values will always provide meaning and purpose to whatever you choose to do in life, especially when it comes to your career, said Max Spielberg, co-founder and President of Genexa. In his own work life, Spielberg firmly believes geschftliches miteinander should be used as a force for good and thats what keeps us coming into work every day.Scare yourself a littleAfter a lmost a decade running an outdoor retailer in Canada, Jamie Clarke became frustrated at how inaccessible and expensive quality gear had become to the average consumer. Along with a partner, Clarke launched LiveOutThere.com, a direct-to-consumer outerwear brand. Transforming our business into a direct-to-consumer offering was as much about sound business as it was about infusing more meaning into our work day at every level, he said. Our work is more urgent, more meaningful and more important now that we are responsible for the entire supplier chain. We dream up our products, manufacture them, and make them available to our customers. We own and are responsible for every step of the value chain. Its scary, but I love it. Weve never been more engaged or passionate about our mission than we are now.Have a big missionMany businesses have internal and external marketing messages as well as a mission that guides their everyday path. As Clarke explained it Everything comes back to our miss ion to Get the World Outside. When we remember that people who spend time outside are happier, healthier and more creative and that our products and knowledge helps make this happen - challenges, setback, rejections all seem a little smaller because our mission is so big. So important. For Clarke, its as much a vision and mission as a business This is not just about making money - its about saving and improving lives. When we remember this - nothing can stop us.Make someone happySometimes finding your path toward a more meaningful career can take a circuitous trajectory. Melissa Ben-Ishay, founder, president and Chief Product officer of Baked by Melissa, started her booming business after being unexpectedly fired from her advertising job.I did not think I was being fired when I was called to HR over the loudspeaker. I actually thought I could have been up for a promotion Needless to say, I was shocked Ben-Ishay admitted. In the days after, she thought it was completely unjustifie d. I regained confidence by surrounding myself with people who love and support me and working hard towards something I love and am super passionate about Baked by Melissa.More than that, Ben-Ishay realized she could combine her career and her passion with an end result of adding joy to peoples lives. I started baking cupcakes long before we started Baked By Melissa for that very reason - they make people happy Thats why I kept baking them - giving cupcakes to someone and seeing their happiness is the very best feeling. And she turned that into the overall company ethos We know the most successful people are happy and passionate about what they are doing every day. We hire like-minded, hardworking, passionate people who love to get st done and thats what makes our team so amazing.
