Yes, as you might have realised by now I am not a fan of unpaid internships and I stand by it. I am not sure the Editor of Career Geek would allow this post to get published, but if it does, then it would be for the greater good of society! Alison Davies previously wrote an article about Unpaid Internships, telling us how a lot more graduates would be happy to do unpaid internships to get work experience if they could only afford it. The argument has always been about the good versus bad of unpaid internships and whether its ethical or not for companies to use such a practice. Have you ever noticed how the people advocating unpaid internships are those who have jobs and probably have a £3.99 lunch consisting of a sandwich, crisps and a drink, not by graduates and students who can barely afford a pasty from local street bakers. Firstly, asking people with jobs about unpaid internships is like asking my dad to comment on IE8. My first question would be: have you used it? Why would you suggest using IE8 only after reading blogs and using the information on the internet? Try using it and see how ridiculously useless it it. Its the same thing with unpaid internships if you havent done one and if you are on an above-the-average salary, then STOP telling graduates they should take up unpaid internships. Do employers think unpaid internships cost nothing? Yes, unpaid internships cost nothing to an employer, but they do to graduates and students. A shirt from Next £22 Trousers from Next £25 Formal shoes and socks £30 Travel £5 / day Living cost £400 pm rent Bills £150 pm Go on, add these and tell me if you can afford to go one month without earning yet paying these costs without any stress? How can you expect graduates and students to cover living costs while doing unpaid internships? I know work experience is important, but why cant employers pay at least a national minimum wage to our graduates and students? Are we not to support our youth? If you are a charity or a start-up, then you may have some points to argue for volunteers and unpaid work-experience. But multi-million profit making organisations are exploiting students and graduates by offering unpaid internships. Stop abusing the word internship when all you offer is unpaid work. Disappointed that unpaid work is even an option for graduates and students. Unfair that young people have been left to the dogs again personally I am against unpaid internships and think the practice should be abandoned. I am glad that Career Geek supports and agrees in principle with the intentions of The Internship Project. When you quantify your achievements with a number, dollar, or percentage, you add credibility to your successes and rise above the competition. It might be a government shut down, severe weather, or a variety of other calamities can happen that affect your job. Even when uncertainty affects a small part of the economy, if it affects your job, then you need to be prepared to navigate unknown waters. Here are a few basic points to keep in mind: There will occasionally be uncertain times look back in history and you can see that financial and political crises happen all the time, all over the world. Even if most of the economy is good, if your job is uncertain, then you have every reason to be concerned enough to do something about it. Job-related stress has symptoms, but it also has resolutions. It is always a good idea to prepare for uncertain times work on paying off your debt load even if all you can do is pay a little more than the minimum every month. Put some money in savings every payday, and dont use it unless it is a last resort. Work out your budget so you have a handle on what you are doing with your money. Talk with your family about how you will get through a crisis; its like a fire drill that prepares you for emergencies. Dont waste todays energy on worrying do something about what stresses you. Take a walk every day instead of eating a donut for breakfast (not that I object to donutsbelieve me, I dontbut a walk is de-stressing where sugary snacks backfire). Look at your worries and work on what you are in control of. If you cant control the thing that worries you, how will worry help? Answer: it wont. Forget about drama and smile at the people in your life we are in the boat together. It makes the journey so much easier when we treat one another with kindness. The people you work with, the people you live with, and the people you interact with as you go through your day are all on the same ocean, and we all do better when we are smiling.

If you search for Santas for Seattle, I show up in the top results,â Cook says. âYou have to have the entrepreneurâs attitude, not an employee attitude. You got to be able to take the risk, get out there, and do it. Itâs hard for some people.â Not all Santas are created equal. A self-proclaimed âsecond-generation Santa,â Cook started dressing up as Saint Nick for a local fire department, as his dad had done. After realizing he could grow an impressively full beard, he worked fraternity events to make extra money in college. Now a veteran, he literally hands out bonuses to employees at lucrative holiday parties for businesses. But one surprising thing he refuses to do is sit. âThere are performing santas and there are sitting Santas,â Cook says. âIâm a performing Santa.â The image of Santa sitting all day at a shopping mall, with a long line of families waiting to meet him, has become a staple of pop culture from A Christmas Story to Bad Santa. But Cook has steadfastly avoided that gig, which he believes gets too little respect. âI just really think that kind of Santa in the mall taking photos and marketing that to death has not been great for Santas, and I donât think itâs something I want to be involved in. I know those Santas get the lowest wages of any Santas out there,â Cook says. When he looks at photos of mall Santas, âtheyâre just pooped out.â âI give a high-intensity event, and itâs four times more an hour than what the guys are making in the mall,â he says. âItâs kind of sad, but I guess if I was much older than I am and I couldnât get around, then the [mall work] would be pretty good for me.â Ed Taylor, 63, has a brighter view of the mall Santa. Known as âthat Santa guyâ in Los Angeles, heâs in high demand and has appeared on TV and was a stand-in for Ed Asner on a movie. His rates range from $350 an hour to $800 an hour on Christmas Day. He started his paid Santa work for a Microsoft photo booth in a mall in 2012. Having played Santa as a volunteer previously, he loved the opportunity and left his career as an internet marketing speaker to pursue it full-time. âPeople were telling me, âYouâre greatâ"you need an agent,ââ Taylor says. âThe first few weeks, Iâm thinking, âYeah, right,â but by the time the season was over, I was like, âI need an agent,â and an agent signed me in the spring. Next thing you know, Iâm doing television work and all kinds of great corporate parties and celebrity events, and Iâm just having a blast.â Taylor has since built up a âsmall businessâ being Santa around the year. In the middle of the holiday season, heâs fully booked, doing everything from Childrenâs Hospital Los Angeles visits to star-studded events and, yes, more mall work. He says he recently had to reject jobs for several âhigh-profile celebritiesâ that he normally wouldâve loved because his schedule wouldnât allow it. In the off-season, he runs an online school for mall Santa hopefuls, called The Santa Claus Conservatory. Its web videos train over 1,000 students worldwide on their appearance, personality, and business strategy. Some of those who go into mall Santa work tell him they find it burdensome, but heâs had few complaints in his own experience. In fact, it gives him a rush. There were long periods of down time,â he says. âSeeing the kids getting the picturesâ"I enjoy that. Personally I just get energized by it⦠If you can be the way I envision Santa Claus being all the time, your life is pretty good.â Taylor concedes that mall work generally pays less than private events, but adds that thereâs a ârange of pay,â and more experienced Santas can command a rate comparable to home visits in the same market. And most Santas, he says, are only doing the work seasonally and have other jobs. The site PayScale estimates that a beginning Santa can make as much as $100 an hour. You can find job postings for mall-oriented Santa work for photos, however, that advertise pay as little as $12 an hour, suggesting how menial the labor is in certain places and for certain companies. Whether youâre commanding the bigger bucks or barely scraping by, one thing is clear across the board: Santa performing is not for everyone. In addition to having the belly and the beard (the fake ones are largely out, unless you can shell out for something convincing), according to Taylor, you just need to love living the part. Everyone wants to be happy in their job, of course, but particularly in Santa work, if youâre not, you can find yourself frustrated very quickly. âThe single most important thing is that attitude,â Taylor says. âYouâre sharing love for Santa Claus. If that doesnât resonate for you, itâs probably not the right career.â
