Yes, as you might have realised by now I am not a fan of unpaid internships and I stand by it. I am not sure the Editor of Career Geek would allow this post to get published, but if it does, then it would be for the greater good of society! Alison Davies previously wrote an article about Unpaid Internships, telling us how a lot more graduates would be happy to do unpaid internships to get work experience if they could only afford it. The argument has always been about the good versus bad of unpaid internships and whether its ethical or not for companies to use such a practice. Have you ever noticed how the people advocating unpaid internships are those who have jobs and probably have a £3.99 lunch consisting of a sandwich, crisps and a drink, not by graduates and students who can barely afford a pasty from local street bakers. Firstly, asking people with jobs about unpaid internships is like asking my dad to comment on IE8. My first question would be: have you used it? Why would you suggest using IE8 only after reading blogs and using the information on the internet? Try using it and see how ridiculously useless it it. Its the same thing with unpaid internships if you havent done one and if you are on an above-the-average salary, then STOP telling graduates they should take up unpaid internships. Do employers think unpaid internships cost nothing? Yes, unpaid internships cost nothing to an employer, but they do to graduates and students. A shirt from Next £22 Trousers from Next £25 Formal shoes and socks £30 Travel £5 / day Living cost £400 pm rent Bills £150 pm Go on, add these and tell me if you can afford to go one month without earning yet paying these costs without any stress? How can you expect graduates and students to cover living costs while doing unpaid internships? I know work experience is important, but why cant employers pay at least a national minimum wage to our graduates and students? Are we not to support our youth? If you are a charity or a start-up, then you may have some points to argue for volunteers and unpaid work-experience. But multi-million profit making organisations are exploiting students and graduates by offering unpaid internships. Stop abusing the word internship when all you offer is unpaid work. Disappointed that unpaid work is even an option for graduates and students. Unfair that young people have been left to the dogs again personally I am against unpaid internships and think the practice should be abandoned. I am glad that Career Geek supports and agrees in principle with the intentions of The Internship Project. 6 effective memory tricks thatll help you nail your exam revision - Debut Whether its retaining info for that monster exam or just remembering the name of that cool person you were chatting to in the smoking area, having a good memory is crucial. Theres no worse feeling than forgetting why you came into a room and feeling like a OAP in your early twenties. Fortunately, there are plenty of good tips out there and we at Debut have whittled it down to the gems. Get more sleep Aside from the fact youll be walking into walls all day, not getting enough sleep really messes with your head. Sure, you can get by. But your brain needs good rest in order to function at its shiny cerebral best. Arm yourself with a good routine. Go to sleep and wake at the same time everyday (even weekends, cheeky so-and-so) and avoid caffeine and those pesky screens before bed. Use apps Do you you even lift? Truth is, you have to exercise your brain just like you would quads on leg day. Logic puzzles and Sudoku would do fine but this is 2017 after all, so how about some brain-training apps? Its all out there, from puzzles and platform games like Lumosity, to spaced repetition memory testers like Eidetic, to apps like Happify and Personal Zen that encourage positive thinking. Be mindful Surprisingly, one of the most important things you can do to get a good memory is to stop telling yourself you have a bad one. Make an effort to have a good memory and every time you remember something that would have slipped your mind celebrate! It takes roughly 8 seconds to fully form a memory, so remove distractions and multi-task less to avoid things slipping through the cracks. Also, try meditation. It increases the thickness of the cerebral cortex and encourages more connections between brain cells. And thats pretty great for your memory. Feed your brain Theres no simple trick to this memory thing. Its all about pleasing the big guy upstairs. Yup, your brain is in charge. Be sure to feed it the right stuff were talking vitamins, minerals and stuff with nutritional value. Healthy fats, omega-3 and omega-6 are the key here and you can get all that in certain oils, fish and fruit. Red wine will improve your memory too (in moderation, you silly goose). Use mnemonic devices Acrostic poems arent just a guaranteed way of getting Tinder replies, theyre also a great way to remember things. Remember learning to Never Eat Shredded Wheat for compass directions. Of course you do. Same can apply for literally anything else. Breaking information down into chunks or associating it with more familiar things are also worth looking into. Teach other people Because when you have great information, its rude to keep it to yourself. Youre also 50% more likely to remember something if you say it out loud as opposed to just reading it. So grab your small sibling or your grandma, sit them down and tell them all about the 1970 Equal Pay Act. Unless of course you arent studying history, in which case, tell them whatever. We may be able to promote products, services, and companies but when it comes to promoting ourselves forget about it!! So, how do you speak about your strengths and successes in a tactful way without making it sound like youre bragging? Talk about your projects, teams, and the value they delivered to the organization. It may feel uncomfortable talking about your achievements, but the fact is you wont get noticed (yet alone hired!) if you dont talk about them. Heres a tip focus on the projects and teams you contributed to, and the value they delivered to the organization. Talk about goals, or stretch goals, that were met and how they benefited the organization to help increase revenue, save costs, or gain more market share. Focus on results. On your resume, in your interviews, and in your networking opportunities instead of talking about your previous responsibilities, talk about tangible results you helped to achieve. When you quantify your achievements with a number, dollar, or percentage, you add credibility to your successes and rise above the competition. For example, instead of saying that you managed a sales team for a specific product, instead, say that you led a sales team that generated $250,000 a year for the past 3 years! Navigating Uncertain Times In Your Job Every so often, uncertain times come to a large part of the economy. It might be a government shut down, severe weather, or a variety of other calamities can happen that affect your job. Even when uncertainty affects a small part of the economy, if it affects your job, then you need to be prepared to navigate unknown waters. Here are a few basic points to keep in mind: There will occasionally be uncertain times look back in history and you can see that financial and political crises happen all the time, all over the world. Even if most of the economy is good, if your job is uncertain, then you have every reason to be concerned enough to do something about it. Job-related stress has symptoms, but it also has resolutions. It is always a good idea to prepare for uncertain times work on paying off your debt load even if all you can do is pay a little more than the minimum every month. Put some money in savings every payday, and dont use it unless it is a last resort. Work out your budget so you have a handle on what you are doing with your money. Talk with your family about how you will get through a crisis; its like a fire drill that prepares you for emergencies. Dont waste todays energy on worrying do something about what stresses you. Take a walk every day instead of eating a donut for breakfast (not that I object to donutsbelieve me, I dontbut a walk is de-stressing where sugary snacks backfire). Look at your worries and work on what you are in control of. If you cant control the thing that worries you, how will worry help? Answer: it wont. Forget about drama and smile at the people in your life we are in the boat together. It makes the journey so much easier when we treat one another with kindness. The people you work with, the people you live with, and the people you interact with as you go through your day are all on the same ocean, and we all do better when we are smiling.
